Anaesthetising animals causes their blood pressure to drop and can potentially cause Hypotension (low blood pressure). By placing your pet on intravenous fluids we are able to maintain blood pressure more easily, thus reducing the stress on the heart and other major organs during anaesthesia.
Elderly, ill and young patients find it harder to cope with hypotension. Not only does it increase their risk from general anaesthesia but it prolongs their recovery. If there is an underlying kidney problem then the drop in blood pressure may cause kidney failure that cannot necessarily be repaired. If intravenous fluids are given the flow of blood to the kidneys is stronger, reducing risk of damage and helping flush the anaesthetic out of the system post operatively – making them feel better quickly.
In an ideal world and as Gold Standard all anaesthetised patients would receive intravenous fluids as a preventative measure. We therefore recommend it for all our patients.
Due to an increasing number of diagnosed cases of Angiostrongylus vasorum (Canine Lungworm) and its potential to cause complications during surgery we recommend that dogs are up to date with an effective Lungworm treatment, such as Advocate Spot On, prior to surgery. If your dog is not regularly treated with Advocate we have a Lungworm Snap test available which can rule out this condition. This test can be carried out on the day of the surgery.
VIP Club members receive a 10% discount off all surgery and medication.

We run our surgeries on an appointment basis. We will always endeavour to find a mutually convenient appointment with your preferred Vet. If your pet requires an urgent appointment please call us on 01444 242500 Burgess Hill or 01273 832968 Hurstpierpoint alternatively please complete our Appointment booking form and we will get back to you. If you are unable to make an appointment please let us know. Failure to attend may result in a cancellation fee.
Our terms and conditions require payment at the time of treatment. We ask all clients to adhere to this. Not paying for treatment at the time costs the practice an ever increasing amount in administration and this makes it difficult for us to keep prices down. Administration charges may be added to your account if we have to send you an invoice.
We recommend that our clients take out pet insurance. Our trained staff are able to issue our patients (aged under a year) with a month's free Petplan insurance. Click here for further details.
